While many may not recognize her name as an independent artist (a travesty for modern music), Amy Allen is one of the most prolific songwriters in pop music today. With writing credits on smash hits such as Harry Styles’s “Adore You,” Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso,” and Tate McRae’s “Greedy,” Allen’s influence in the pop world is truly astonishing. It seems as though every project she touches is meant for greatness, and her latest solo track is no different.
Like many of her other solo projects, such as her EP AWW!, “girl with a problem” is an introspective track about love and life. The track itself is an ode to the struggles of a relationship turned sour. It speaks to the push and pull of loving someone so much that you overlook the problems that relationship is causing. The stumbling verses feel like that stop-and-catch moment in the relationship, but the chorus boasts a breathy, layered vocal that feels like the delusion of forgetting.
The simplicity of the track itself is engaging. With really only a forward-set guitar and a series of mumbled vocal tracks, the song doesn’t have much going on, but its simplicity is interesting. It feels different to the upbeat, energetic summer singles catching attention right now. There’s something uniquely Allen in this track, and every other project she’s released. Whether you’re listening to her independent releases, her writing collaborations, or the works she’s given to other artists, it’s hard not to love what Allen puts out. She’s truly the biggest (and best) songwriter that the world doesn’t know. But hopefully, they will soon.
