Rush – Troye Sivan
★★★★★
Australian pop star Troye Sivan released his latest track “Rush” on July 13th. The song is the lead single for Sivan’s upcoming album Something To Give Eachother. It’s a perfect storm of steady beats, fun lyrics, and fantastic visuals. His self-proclaimed love for “community, sex, and parties” clearly drives the focus of this song. It’s hard not to be obsessed.
Sivan grew to popularity as a content creator on Youtube in the early 2010’s. The singer came out on the platform, and from there he grew into an unmistakable queer icon. His songs often center around themes inherent to the LGBTQ+ community, and he’s known for his tongue-in-cheek innuendos and not-so-subtle sexual subtext. His latest release holds to this standard impeccably.
Lyrics such as “Translate your vibration / let your body talk to me” encapsulate the heady, often sexual, environment of a party. In a clever play of words, Sivan writes of “feeling the rush” in this scenario while also alluding to the brand of poppers that the song is named for. It’s casual, fun lyricism that represents the environment Sivan wrote the song for.
All in all, the song is hard not to fall in love with. It’s silly, it’s fun, it’s easy to dance to, and I can’t get it out of my head. Sivan truly hit it out of the park with this release. I’ve had it on repeat for the last two weeks, and I can’t imagine turning it off any time soon.
