Loveseat – Still Woozy ★★★★☆
For his debut album, Still Woozy (also known as Sven Gamsky) presented his undeniable artistry through daydreams and comfortability. If This Isn’t Nice, I Don’t Know What Is indulged audiences in a trance-like quality, unlike traditional expansions of the bedroom pop genre. Gamsky approaches his canonic dreamy sound through storytelling and grounded relationships for his sophomore album Loveseat.
Loveseat is an album chock-full of love songs, but not the sappy ones you might hear in the background of a movie. The album tracks use love as a tool to create stories, weaving plot lines into melodies to adapt such stories into familiar lyrics. Flowing with recollections of platonic, familial, and romantic tropes, it is evident why love is the namesake for this record.
With this album, Gamsky had a goal of vulnerability and variety in mind. As he stretched his comfortable limits, the Still Woozy universe began to adapt to a warmer and more inviting pace. “It’s so captivating when someone can take you on the journey of the song lyrically and sonically. That was what I was trying to do to grow as an artist, push myself, and be more vulnerable too.” This change does not detract from the recognizable Still Woozy sound but enhances his organic flow to what is pertinent now.
“I always want to grow. I always want to change.”
When writing the lyrics for his latest album, Gamsky’s self-reflection regarding his various relationships emphasized his goal of change. Evident through his song “Big Fish“, Gamsky has alternatively written about his relationship with his father. Working on emotional and driven lyricism that directly correlates to those significant in his life is an eye-opening new direction within the Still Woozy universe.
These emotional values strengthen Loveseat and present Still Woozy in a new narrative to his fans. As Gamsky continues to explore his musical range, he hones in on his artistic identity in cohesion with his adaptability.
“I have to be able to stand behind it. Does this feel like me? Does this feel good? It’s a really difficult process to figure out.”
The Still Woozy persona and universe are exciting musical journeys that listeners continue to adore. With every change Gamsky makes to his writing style, he emphasizes the importance of creativity and fun while making music. To follow along with his artistry through his discography here.
