cynical – Bea Miller

★★★★☆

Bea Miller follows up her single “lonely bitch” (released back in January) with “cynical”, a glam grunge response to the predictability of love.

The track recalls Miller’s last relationship as a crash-and-burn stereotype, but explains that she was aware of the impending feat. The song beings with a classic alt-pop intro to compliment Miller’s femme rasp.

The lyrics follow the story of an untrustworthy partner and Miller’s realization that she was right all along and that love really is that monotonous. The song begins with the accusation of her ex-partner being dishonest and her realization that honesty cannot save the relationship. Following her understanding, Miller expresses through her chorus that she is “honesty fine / You’ve proven me right and I might kinda like it”. Who doesn’t love to be right, even in the face of heartache?

Overall, the track is one you can expect from Bea Miller: a pop song with an alternative flare and the underlying tone of female empowerment. Do not let the common occurrence of a song like this fool you into not giving it a chance. It’s a great song, especially for anyone mad about spending another February 14th alone.
