Default Setting” – BIZZY

★★★☆☆

Singer-songwriter BIZZY grew to fame in the music industry through her songwriting. After working as a songwriter with other artists for years, the Nashville-based artist toyed with releasing her own music. Following a viral tease of her track “Anybody,” BIZZY took a leap of faith and put the track out as her debut single, and from that moment on, BIZZY has been a not-so-independent artist to watch. From signing to Big Loud Rock, to opening on national US tour, to releasing her first EP, the alt-pop singer had a busy 2023. Now, she steps firmly into the singing role of singer-songwriter with her latest single “Default Setting.”

The track is a relatable, pop-punk-inspired breakup song. BIZZY speaks of the post-breakup confusion after a long-term relationship. She opens with only a plucking acoustic guitar under moody vocals, and she sings of the new boyfriends she’s entertained after the breakup. It feels sweet and honest—fitting for the highly relatable ponderings like “I dated three guys…one even said he loved me.”

The track, however, takes a turn after the first verse. BIZZY follows up these romantic notions with a reminiscent ideation of her ex: calling him the “default setting” boyfriend archetype in her mind. This confusion, and subsequent anger and frustration, at the muscle-memory post-breakup is mirrored in a heavy sound wall. The pre-chorus of the song opens up into heavy drums and a belting vocal that lasts for the rest of the song. It perfectly encapsulates the push and pull of wanting to get over a relationship but not being able to rid your mind of the memories. It is a phenomenal sonic metaphor.

BIZZY’s vocals soar in her belts. They sound clear, supported, and strong. Some of her verses feel out of character, but overall, “Default Setting” is a fun, upbeat new addition to BIZZY’s discography. With heavy beats, relatable lyrics, and a blooming pop star at the helm, it’s hard not to be excited by this latest release. If these strong vocals and booming instrumentals continue, BIZZY is sure to be an artist on the radar, and whatever she puts out next is sure to be a hit.
